The iconic figure known as The Mighty Sparrow, renowned for popularizing calypso music internationally from the 1950s onwards, has passed away at the age of 91. Born as Slinger Francisco, he peacefully departed in New York surrounded by his family following a brief illness, as confirmed by his family.

Hailing from the coastal town of Grand Roy, Grenada, Francisco migrated to Trinidad and Tobago with his parents at a young age. Trinidad and Tobago, considered the birthplace of calypso music, provided the backdrop for The Mighty Sparrow’s rise to fame, with hits such as “Jean and Dinah,” “Both of Them,” “Congo Man,” “Mr. Walker,” and “The Lizard.”

Acknowledged as a stalwart in the entertainment industry, Francisco was praised for his talents as a singer, songwriter, and mentor. He was revered for carrying the essence and narratives of his people worldwide through his music and charismatic performances.

Over his six-decade career, The Mighty Sparrow recorded a vast repertoire of songs, including those with political and social themes. Notable compositions like “Model Nation,” commemorating Trinidad and Tobago’s independence, and “Martin Luther King For President,” reflected his versatility and relevance in addressing contemporary issues.

Honored with national accolades in Trinidad and Tobago and bestowed an honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of the West Indies in 1987, Francisco’s influence extended beyond his home country. Leaders from various nations, including Jamaica, Barbados, and Dominica, paid homage to his legacy, underscoring his impact on Caribbean culture and music.

Despite his passing, The Mighty Sparrow’s music and legacy are expected to endure, resonating with fans globally and continuing to inspire future generations.
