The owner of the Ambassador Bridge, Matthew Moroun, from the United States, requested a meeting with high-ranking Canadian government officials regarding the new Gordie Howe International Bridge over three months before its opening. The details of the meeting remain mostly undisclosed, as per federal briefing notes acquired through the Access to Information Act. Moroun, accompanied by Kevin Kalczynski and Brennan Lee, met with Canadian officials including Paul Halucha, Marco Presutti, and Jesse Tracey.

Although the agenda and specifics of the meeting were redacted, it was revealed that Moroun had initiated the meeting. Despite attempts to reach out to the Ambassador Bridge for Moroun’s perspective, no response was received. The new Gordie Howe bridge was anticipated to divert a significant portion of traffic from the Ambassador Bridge, which handles a substantial amount of trade between Canada and the U.S.

The Canadian government was under pressure to open the Gordie Howe bridge swiftly, with political influence from the White House. The meeting aimed to understand Moroun’s stance on corridor operations as the new bridge neared completion and address any outstanding issues. The involvement of a private entity in an international border crossing adds complexities, focusing on profitability rather than trade efficiency, according to experts.

Discussions with private bridge owners are not uncommon, said Housing Infrastructure and Communities Canada, emphasizing ongoing collaboration to enhance trade corridors. Following the meeting, it was noted that the Gordie Howe bridge would proceed with its opening, prompting adjustments in toll rates by the Ambassador Bridge to compete.

The emergence of the publicly owned Gordie Howe bridge posed challenges for the older, privately owned Ambassador Bridge, leading to strategic shifts in response to the new competition. The Moroun family has historically taken steps to protect their business interests, including legal challenges and political lobbying efforts.

The alignment between the Trump administration’s policies and the Moroun family’s business objectives has resulted in a unique dynamic, despite potential repercussions on cross-border trade. The evolving landscape of the bridge industry underscores the shift from a monopoly to a competitive environment, influencing pricing strategies and operational tactics.
