The Ottawa Redblacks have set a new record for the longest losing streak in the modern era of the CFL. Following their 33-21 defeat to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night, the Redblacks have now lost 15 consecutive games dating back to the previous season. This surpasses the previous record held by the Shreveport Pirates, who lost 14 straight games in 1994, according to CFL historian and league associate vice-president of football analytics and statistics, Steve Daniel.
Expressing disappointment, Jimmy Fata, a dedicated Redblacks fan, reflected on the team’s current situation after witnessing the historic loss in Winnipeg. Fata acknowledged the lack of clarity on the underlying issues causing the team’s struggles and expressed a desire for solutions to turn the tide.
Traditionally, the Redblacks celebrate touchdowns by cutting a log section known as a “wood cookie” and branding it with the team logo. However, with the team’s recent lack of success, Fata, who participates in this tradition, humorously noted the scarcity of “biscuits” being cut.
In addition to breaking the modern-day CFL losing streak record, the Redblacks now hold the third-longest streak in the entire CFL record book, which dates back to 1907. Another loss against the Montreal Alouettes would tie them with the Hamilton Wildcats, who endured a 16-game losing streak between 1948 and 1949.
Looking ahead, Daniel emphasized the importance of the Redblacks’ ongoing roster adjustments, particularly focusing on defensive improvements. He highlighted the team’s recent defensive line changes as a step in the right direction and stressed the need for continued strategic rebuilding.
Despite the challenges, Fata encouraged unwavering support for the team through thick and thin, likening it to nurturing a child through all circumstances. He remained optimistic about the team’s potential for improvement and expressed resilience as a loyal football fan.
