Weekend GO train service to Toronto has officially started from Kitchener after a long wait. The inaugural train departed from Kitchener GO station on Sunday morning, attracting a significant number of passengers from both Kitchener and Guelph. Michael Druker, the chair of Tri-Cities Transportation Action Group (TriTag), expressed his excitement about the new service, highlighting the strong demand for train travel in the region.
The morning train from Kitchener leaves at 7:49 a.m., arriving at Union Station by 9:35 a.m. Another afternoon trip departs Kitchener at 3:49 p.m., reaching Toronto at 5:35 p.m. Return trips from Toronto leave at 4:48 p.m. and 10:48 p.m., arriving back in Kitchener at 6:38 p.m. and 12:38 a.m.
Residents like Jeff Beamer, a TriTag volunteer, expressed their satisfaction with the new weekend service, which allows them to easily visit Toronto and reconnect with loved ones. The initial train departure also drew a large crowd at Guelph Central GO station, with MPP Mike Schreiner commending the initiative on social media.
Passengers, such as Sarah Conlen and Carlos Afra, emphasized the importance of improved weekend transit between Guelph and Waterloo, citing the convenience and community benefits. The introduction of weekend train service aims to alleviate overcrowding on buses and highways, addressing long-standing concerns raised by commuters like Julia Baribeau.
While the new service is a significant step towards sustainable transportation, Druker believes there is still room for improvement, advocating for expanded intercity train services. He envisions a future where alternatives to car travel are more accessible, promoting economic opportunities and environmental sustainability in the Waterloo region.
