A young baseball standout from Newfoundland and Labrador has achieved a significant milestone once more – this time by becoming one of the early selections in the newly established Women’s Professional Baseball League. Jaida Lee, a 19-year-old athlete from St. John’s, was chosen as the 14th overall pick by the New York team during the league’s inaugural draft held on Thursday.

Participating in the draft remotely from Whistler, British Columbia, Lee expressed her excitement, describing the moment as a dream come true. Surprised by her earlier-than-expected selection, she shared her joy in being picked and the overwhelming support she received from friends during the event.

Jaida has previously made waves in the sports world by being the first woman to compete in men’s baseball at the Canada Games in 2022, a historical feat that earned her a place in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Recognized as one of the most promising young pitchers in North America by the Women’s Pro Baseball League website, Jaida will balance her commitments by continuing to play for the University of British Columbia while preparing for the upcoming season in the United States.

Despite being a top pick in the draft, Lee understands that her spot on the New York team is not guaranteed, as only 15 out of the 30 selected players will receive contracts. Nevertheless, she is determined to showcase her skills and dedication, expressing her eagerness to be part of this groundbreaking opportunity in her professional athletic career.

Reflecting on her journey, Jaida emphasized her initial aspirations of playing professionally with men, highlighting the significance of the newly established women’s professional league in fulfilling her dreams. The support and celebration extended beyond the draft, with her family and friends in St. John’s hosting a lively gathering to mark this momentous occasion.

Starting her baseball journey at the age of six, Jaida faced challenges playing on boys’ teams due to the absence of girls’ teams at the time. Her father, Dave Lee, praised her unwavering determination and hard work, noting how she has become a role model for aspiring female athletes across the country. He emphasized the impact of Jaida’s achievements in paving the way for future generations of women in sports, creating opportunities that were previously inaccessible.

Jaida Lee’s remarkable journey serves as an inspiration and a testament to perseverance and dedication, setting a new standard for women’s involvement and recognition in the world of professional baseball.
