Jeopardy! enthusiasts might spot a familiar figure from Thunder Bay on a forthcoming episode early next month. Ron Lalonde, the twin brother of former contestant and 13-time champion Ray Lalonde, is set to make his television debut on December 3. Both siblings, hailing from Thunder Bay and alumni of Hillcrest High School, pursued careers outside their hometown. Ron, now residing in Pittsburgh as a medical physicist, while Ray, based in Toronto, gained fame after his successful Jeopardy! run in 2022, securing nearly $400,000 USD in winnings.
Raised in a household where watching Jeopardy! was a nightly tradition, the Lalonde brothers developed a quiet aspiration inspired by their parents’ love for the show. Ray, who had been attempting the Jeopardy! test for two decades, finally made it onto the show after multiple attempts, motivating Ron to follow suit. Ron was in the contestant pool when Ray got his chance on the show, and after producers discovered the presence of an identical twin also trying out, they encouraged Ron to persist. Three years after Ray’s success, Ron received the call to appear on the show.
Drawing on his brother’s experience, Ron diligently prepared for his own appearance. Taking advice beyond typical trivia knowledge, he learned practical tips such as carrying lozenges to combat nerves and purchasing a practice buzzer for training. Despite being a long-time viewer of the show since its Art Fleming era, Ron found himself more nervous than anticipated when facing the studio audience.
During his time on set, Ron encountered the unique challenge of being mistaken for his brother, Ray, which led to amusing moments and teasing from others. The episode also captured a cameo moment where host Ken Jennings playfully pointed out the twin mix-up. With their family present at the taping, the Lalondes enjoyed sharing this special experience, turning it into a mini vacation.
While Ray expressed contentment with his Jeopardy! journey, having made numerous appearances on the show, the focus now shifts to Ron as he takes the spotlight on December 3. The Lalonde family, with ties still in Thunder Bay, views this latest Jeopardy! moment as a source of hometown pride.
