Jennifer Baxter finds solace and escape on the curling ice amidst the complexities of her life. As a key member of Nova Scotia’s Christina Black team, Baxter is gearing up for the Canadian Olympic trials in Halifax. While the men’s team from Nova Scotia didn’t make the cut, Team Black aims to secure a historic spot as the first Nova Scotia representatives in Olympic curling.

Competing against eight men’s and eight women’s teams for a chance to compete in the upcoming Olympics in Italy, Baxter’s days are filled with teaching at the Halifax Regional Centre for Education. Unlike some elite curlers who can work remotely during competitions, Baxter takes unpaid time off work due to the nature of her job, necessitating a fifth team member, Marlee Powers, to reduce Baxter’s travel commitments.

Balancing her teaching career with curling, Baxter’s schedule is demanding, with long hours and limited personal time. Amidst personal challenges like infertility struggles and the loss of her father, curling serves as a crucial outlet for Baxter to disconnect and focus on the sport she loves.

With the Olympic trials around the corner, Baxter and Team Black are driven by their fighting spirit and hard work ethic. Despite being ranked fourth in the women’s field, they are determined to give their all on the ice. Reflecting the resilience of Nova Scotians, skip Christina Black emphasizes their dedication, echoing the province’s reputation for relentless effort and determination.

Looking forward to the support of the hometown crowd, Team Black aims to capitalize on the advantage of local backing. With a bronze medal at the recent Scotties Tournament of Hearts under their belts, Baxter and Black are eager to make their mark in the Olympic trials and potentially represent Canada on the international stage.

As Baxter immerses herself in the competition, she views curling as a temporary escape, allowing her to focus solely on the task at hand. Despite the challenges and sacrifices, wearing the Canadian flag remains a dream for Baxter, driving her dedication and commitment to the sport she holds dear.
