The initial federal budget by the Liberal party successfully passed with 170 votes in favor and 168 against. Notably, all five Conservative Members of Parliament in southwestern Ontario opposed the budget. The Conservative MPs shared their insights leading up to the crucial vote.

Kathy Borrelli, the Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore Conservative MP, declined an interview with CBC, stating concerns about the accumulating costs associated with the budget. Expressing a desire for affordability for Canadians, Borrelli emphasized her worries about the budget’s impact on present and future generations. She reiterated the Conservative stance on advocating for an economically viable budget for Canada.

In Windsor West, Conservative MP Harb Gill did not respond to interview requests but criticized the budget on social media, labeling it as a deceptive financial plan. Gill dissected the budget process and accounting standards, highlighting the substantial increase in spending despite claimed reductions, which could lead to financial burdens on Canadian families.

The federal Liberals needed support from opposition MPs or abstentions to secure the budget’s approval. After extensive debates, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May declared her backing for the budget, while NDP MPs remained tight-lipped about their voting intentions. Failure to pass the budget could have triggered a snap election shortly after Carney’s election.

Various Conservative MPs, including Chris Lewis, Dave Epp, and Marilyn Gladu, expressed discontent with the budget, criticizing the government’s financial management. They highlighted concerns about increased deficits, taxation, and lack of support for crucial sectors like youth, seniors, and communities, emphasizing the need for fiscal responsibility and economic prosperity.

The budget approval process was closely monitored, with the outcome pivotal for the country’s economic trajectory.
