Los Angeles celebrated the 1,000-day countdown to its inaugural Paralympic Games by revealing an initial competition timetable for the 2028 event, promising a larger array of sports, sessions, and medals than ever before. The LA28 organizing committee disclosed that the Games will encompass 23 sports and 560 medal events spread over 294 sessions, carefully crafted in collaboration with international federations and Olympic Broadcasting Services to prioritize athlete well-being while maximizing global broadcast opportunities.
Ileana Rodriguez, LA28’s vice president of Paralympic strategy and relations, emphasized the significance of Los Angeles hosting its maiden Paralympic Games and the meticulous planning put into tailoring the competition schedule to meet athletes’ requirements. She remarked, “These Games have been meticulously designed to cater to both athletes and the worldwide audience as we collectively anticipate an extraordinary experience.”
Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles highlighted that the city will welcome its first-ever Paralympic Games with a record number of female athletes showcasing their talents on the global platform. The grand opening ceremony for the 2028 Games is slated for August 15, 2028, at SoFi Stadium, with the closing ceremony scheduled for August 27 at the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
The first set of Paralympic champions in Los Angeles will be crowned on the inaugural day in events such as Para athletics, wheelchair fencing, shooting Para sport, Para equestrian, and Para track cycling. Additionally, Para climbing will make its debut in the Paralympics, spanning four days of competition starting from day nine. Furthermore, wheelchair rugby and sitting volleyball will incorporate extended formats with play-in rounds.
Organizers have indicated that a more comprehensive event-by-event schedule will be unveiled in 2026 to provide further details on the exciting lineup of competitions awaiting athletes and spectators alike.
