A1 Islington closed as car ploughs into café in horror three-vehicle crash on busy road

Must read

The A1 has been forced to close in both directions following a three-vehicle crash which saw a car mounting the pavement and smashing into a café earlier this morning.

The road shut following the crash, which took place at around 7.45am this morning. Three vehicles appear to have been involved in the crash, with the scene taped off by police and debris scattered across the road. Emergency services quickly rushed to the scene where four people were treated for their injuries. One of the cars involved in the crash ploughed into an outdoor seating area at a nearby café, police confirmed.

The crash happened on the A1 in the Upper Street area of Islington, popular for shopping and dining with plenty of restaurants and cafés lining the street. A stretch of the road has closed as a result of the crash, from the junction with Florence Street to the junction with Islington Park Street and Canonbury Lane.

As a result of the road closure, traffic is heavy through the area, especially on the approach to the closure from St Mary’s Church to Ottolenghi and the Post Office. A diversion is in place affecting bus routes 4, 19, 30, and 43, which are being rerouted while emergency teams work at the scene.

A spokesperson fro the Metropolitan Police said: “We are currently dealing with a three-vehicle road traffic collision on Upper Street in Islington. One vehicle collided with outdoor seating at a nearby café. Officer sremain at the scene and are working to assess the circumstances.”
