Celtic win Scottish Premiership to equal Rangers’ record number of titles

Must read

Celtic have won the Scottish Premiership after cruising to a 5-0 victory over Dundee United at Tannadice. An own goal from Ryan Strain and braces from Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah wrapped up a fourth-consecutive title for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

The triumph means Rodgers, who is in his second spell in charge of the club, is now Celtic’s most successful living manager after guiding them to 11 pieces of silverware. Celtic have also now won 55 league titles to equal the amount won by rivals Rangers.

“People on the outside maybe underestimate the difficulties in meeting the high expectations that the club has set over the years,” Rodgers said ahead of the game.

“It’s not an easy thing, this job managing this club and for the players to play for this club. It really isn’t easy. I know we’re in a golden era here at Celtic and people always say you’re miles ahead and everything else.

“You look back to the eras here, the 60s and 70s, Celtic winning so much. And then we have eras here where winning a trophy was a real challenge and really, really difficult.

“And then you look to the early 2000s, Martin [O’Neill] coming in and then the growth then after that. And it’s just continued. But it’s a great testament to every manager that’s been here, every coach that’s walked, every player that’s played.”

Rodgers also paid tribute to Celtic’s majority shareholder Dermot Desmond, admitting that he is “eternally grateful” to the Irish businessman for giving him another opportunity in the dugout after Ange Postecoglou left to join Tottenham in 2023.

“I’m just privileged to be in my position and to have the opportunity,” he added. “It’s one of the things that I’ll always be eternally grateful for Dermot, for bringing me back because without his support and his belief in me, I wouldn’t have this chance to have the opportunity to win the trophies.

“So, for that, I have so many people I need to make proud. And that’s always in my thinking, really, as opposed to the personal.

“The titles and the piece of metal or silver that we get, when I see that, I only see the hard work and all the ideas that we present every day and the values that we work to as a club.

“That’s my only intention, to keep on that road and keep on that path, to keep the success with the club. And hopefully then, when I leave, I can look back and think, well, I’ve either done okay or not.”

The game was interrupted in the first-half after Celtic fans threw tangerines on to the pitch to protest Dundee’s ticket prices, with the hosts charging away supporters £42 for an adult ticket when it became clear that the league leaders would need just a point from the clash to clinch the title.

Celtic fans could also be heard chanting about the ticket prices and displayed a banner which read: “Enjoy the fruits of our labour”. The tangerines were cleared off the pitch and the game was able to resume.

Now that Celtic have won the league title, they can now turn their attention to completing a domestic treble. Celtic beat rivals Rangers on penalties to win the Scottish League Cup in December and are set to meet Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final next summer.
