With summer just around the corner, millions of Brits will be getting ready to pack their bags for a sunny getaway – though one little European island off many peoples’ radars.
The Greek island of Ithaca might be known to some with a fondness for ancient European literature as it is known as the home of Ulysses, the hero from Homer’s epic the Odyssey. Situated in the Ionian sea to the west of continental Greece, the island could make for the perfect holiday destination for those wanting an option away from more common destinations in the country such as Crete or the party destinations of Mykonos and Zante.
While it might take an extra bit of effort to get to, the reward is an island packed with cultural charm and excellent weather typical in much of the Mediterranean.
Ithaca is layered with history dating back to ancient antiquity through to its occupation during the Ottoman era. But today visitors will be dazzled by its incredible beauty and lush green nature similar to other nearby islands.
An attractive option to many Brits will be its exotic beaches with dazzling blue waters. The island is an ideal destination for those who want to enjoy total relaxation away from more busy options available for tourists’ consideration.
Hikers keen for breath-taking surroundings while they work up a sweat can walk along many old footpaths that criss-cross the island. Following these trails will lead visitors to tiny chapels, small settlements, hilltops with stunning views and secluded beaches.
As with many Greek islands, Ithaca offers plenty of options for those wanting to enjoy the local cuisine while also taking in stunning crystal waters and majestic sunsets. Greek cuisine is an exemplary example of the Mediterranean diet that emphasises plant-based foods, whole grains with moderate amounts of lean protein and low-fat dairy.
The diet is considered to be among the more healthy options for many people and can lower your risk of cardiovascular disease as well as other chronic conditions. People whose interest in Ithaca has been piqued have several options in getting to the island.
According to Greeka, tourists are able to get to Ithaca by using ferries from several locations, including from the nearby island of Kefalonia.
Ferry routes to the island include:
– Routes to Pisaetos port in Ithaca are carried out from Killini, Kefalonia and from Astakos– Routes to Frikies port in Ithaca are carried out from Kefalonia and Lefkada– Routes to Vathy port in Ithaca are carried out from Kefalonia and Lefkada
People who want to fly as close to Ithaca as possible can choose to head to Kefalonia while those jetting to the capital Athens can fly to the island in an hour-long flight before taking the ferry to their final destination.
