Amazon Prime has just added a ‘pulse pounding’ action thriller sequel that includes an hour long set-piece fans claim is worth the subscription fee alone.
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, is now part of the retail behemoth’s vast streaming library. The movie had a limited cinema release in the US earlier this year, where it raked in a respectable $57 million in a short period against its $40 million budget.
Due to its success, a third instalment is reportedly in the works. Subtitled Pantera, the film is a sequel to the unexpected hit Den of Thieves, which first hit screens in 2018.
Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. reprise their roles as law enforcer Nicholas ‘Big Nick’ O’Brien and international thief Donnie Wilson respectively. The original film is also available on Amazon Prime, allowing those who missed it to enjoy a perfect double feature.
The sequel’s storyline draws from real-life events, specifically the 2003 Antwerp diamond heist, and follows O’Brien (Butler) as he attempts to track down a suspected thief in Europe with plans to collaborate on a heist, reports Surrey Live.
Pantera has managed to score a higher rating than its predecessor on Rotten Tomatoes with 62%, impressing many fans. One fan shared their thoughts online, posting: “This movie was awesome. The opening sequence is amazing, something straight out of a video game.”
One reviewer highlighted a specific sequence crafted by director Christian Gudegast, describing it as “an hour-long intricately staged, authentically researched and tense, action set piece.”
My Lady Jane is free with an Amazon Prime 30-day trial, which usually costs £8.99.
This also includes next day delivery on thousands of items, Amazon Music Prime, Deliveroo Plus and free delivery on HelloFresh orders for a year.
They further commented: “This sequence is worth the price of admission alone, as it’s the closest an American hamburger crime movie product has gotten to the type of artfully silent nuts-and-bolts detail that the French became famous for when this genre was arguably at its peak.”
Echoing similar thoughts, another viewer shared: “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is the kind of movie that’ll make you want to quit your day job and become an international jewel thief (not that I’m condoning that, of course! ). With Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. leading the charge, the film is a high-octane ride that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.”
They added: “What really sets Den of Thieves 2: Pantera apart is its inspiration from a real-life heist. The 2003 Antwerp diamond heist was one of the biggest and most daring jewel thefts in history, and the film does a great job of capturing the excitement and danger of that event. All in all, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is a pulse-pounding thrill ride that delivers on all fronts.”
Meanwhile, a devotee of the first film concedes that the follow-up has big shoes to fill but insists it’s a worthwhile watch. They shared: “More stylish than the first but still sassy, Pantera is a good watch, so long as you’re willing to look past its ending and other logical leaps of faith.”
They continued with a nod to the under-the-radar status of the original: “The original is an instant classic that no one knows about, so Pantera has a lot to live up to. It mostly delivers, with Butler and Jackson renewing their special game of chess.”
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is streaming on Netflix.
