Since the commencement of the fall chum salmon season in mid-July, Fisheries and Oceans Canada has reported an estimated one million salmon entering the Yukon River from the Bering Sea. However, experts caution that this increase does not necessarily indicate a positive trend in the population of this specific species.
In 2020, there was a significant decline in chum salmon numbers, which raised concerns among researchers. Sebastian Jones, a wildlife analyst at the Yukon Conservation Society, expressed worry over the lack of understanding regarding the fluctuations in salmon numbers, highlighting the complexity of these ecosystems.
According to researchers, Canadian-origin salmon account for approximately 12% of the returning fish, a decrease from the usual range of 20% to 30%. Despite this lower percentage, Jones noted an improvement compared to previous years, with hopes for 100,000 chum salmon crossing into Canada this year, an increase from the 25,000 recorded last year.
Jones emphasized that while progress has been made, the current numbers are still below the desired range of 150,000 to 250,000 chum salmon entering the Yukon River. This situation has prompted a need for further investigation into the factors affecting salmon populations.
Stephanie Peacock, a scientist at the Pacific Salmon Foundation, highlighted the importance of chum salmon as a vital nutrient source in the fall, particularly due to their later migration compared to chinook salmon. Both species have experienced declines over time, with the decline in chum salmon numbers raising particular concerns due to its rapid occurrence.
Researchers are closely examining the Bering Sea ecosystem, where the Yukon River meets the ocean, to understand the environmental changes impacting the salmon’s upstream journey. Changes such as rising water temperatures and increased industrial trawl fishing have raised uncertainties about their effects on the ecosystem.
While there is room for cautious optimism, Peacock stressed the need for continued vigilance and long-term conservation efforts to address the ongoing challenges faced by Yukon chum salmon.
