Canadian tennis player Victoria Mboko emerged victorious at the Hong Kong Open by defeating Spain’s Cristina Bucsa in a thrilling match that ended 7-5, 6-7 (9), 6-2. This win marked Mboko’s second WTA title of the season, following her earlier triumph at the National Bank Open in Montreal in August.

Reflecting on her success, the 19-year-old from Burlington, Ont., expressed her satisfaction with finishing the season on a high note. Mboko emphasized the importance of staying composed and managing expectations in the competitive tennis environment. She acknowledged the unpredictability of matches and credited her focus on a day-by-day approach for her achievements.

Having previously defeated Bucsa in Rome qualifying this year, Mboko extended her winning record against her opponent to 2-0. Despite facing a tough challenge in the match and losing the second set, Mboko maintained her composure and resilience to secure the victory in the deciding set. She highlighted the mental strength required to bounce back from setbacks and remain positive on the court.

Mboko’s journey to the final included a hard-fought three-set win against compatriot Leylah Fernandez in the semifinals. Overcoming a wrist injury that disrupted her momentum earlier in the season, Mboko’s determination and skill have propelled her towards a significant ranking boost. She is expected to climb into the top 20 of the WTA rankings following her impressive performance in Hong Kong.
