Vancouver Whitecaps have secured their first-ever spot in the Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup final by triumphing over hometown team San Diego FC with a 3-1 victory in the Western Conference final on Saturday evening.
Brian White netted twice, and the Whitecaps also benefited from a goal by San Diego ‘keeper Pablo Sisniega, who received a red card in the 79th minute for a rough challenge on Whitecaps midfielder Ryan Gauld.
The next challenge for Vancouver will be against Inter Miami CF, led by Lionel Messi, the Eastern Conference final winners, in a bid to clinch the MLS Cup title in Florida on December 6.
Inter Miami secured their place in the final by defeating New York City FC 5-1 in the Eastern Conference final earlier on the same Saturday. This final will mark the first appearance for both clubs in the MLS Cup final.
Brian White opened the scoring for Vancouver in the eighth minute, with assists from Andrés Cubas and Ali Ahmed. The Whitecaps extended their lead three minutes later when Manu Duah’s attempt to clear the ball rebounded off Sisniega’s back into the net.
White continued his scoring spree just before halftime, securing a three-goal lead with the help of Cubas and Ahmed.
In the second half, San Diego’s Hirving Lozano scored with an assist from Jeppe Tverskov, reducing the deficit to 3-1. However, San Diego faced a disadvantage after Sisniega’s red card in the 79th minute.
Both Takaoka for the Whitecaps and Sisniega for San Diego displayed their skills, with Takaoka making three crucial saves in his postseason start and Sisniega saving four shots in his third postseason appearance.
The atmosphere was electric in Vancouver as fans gathered at B.C. Place to witness the Whitecaps’ historic journey to the MLS Cup Western final, following their impressive season performance and victories over FC Dallas and Los Angeles FC.
Previously, Vancouver had defeated Miami 3-1 in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal back in April, setting the stage for an exciting clash in the upcoming MLS Cup final.
