UPEI students came together to showcase their diverse cultures and traditions during the university’s annual Global Village event held over the weekend. Sharen Joe, a Psychology student, represented Kerala, a state located on India’s southern coast, emphasizing the country’s rich diversity with unique characteristics in each state.
Joe expressed her fondness for the varied sceneries, cuisines, and cultures found across India, highlighting the importance of events like the Global Village celebration in enabling students to share their backgrounds and take pride in their roots. She emphasized the significance of staying connected to one’s heritage, especially when living in a new country, as it facilitates connections with others.
The event featured students from approximately 17 different countries, including Ecuador. Amy Montesdeoca, a third-year business student involved with the International Student Office (ISO), represented Ecuador and underscored the country’s diversity with four distinct geographical regions, each holding a wealth of stories and traditions close to her heart.
Despite a decline in international student enrollment following government regulations on visas, Montesdeoca expressed her love for both Ecuador and Prince Edward Island, considering the island her second home. She highlighted the value of bridging her native culture with her new environment, reflecting a meaningful aspect of her participation in the event.
Jerry Wang, the ISO director, emphasized the importance of multiculturalism, especially in his role as a Canadian immigrant. He stressed the need for fostering understanding and unity among diverse communities, noting the strength that such celebrations bring to society.
The Global Village celebration at UPEI served as a platform for students to share their cultural heritage, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual respect among participants from various backgrounds.
