This year’s Pasadena Days-Humber Valley Strawberry Festival in Pasadena witnessed a remarkable yet unusual concert experience, as spruce budworm moths descended in large numbers. Vanessa Newman, a member of the Corner Brook band Merrymaker, described the scene as resembling a snowstorm, with moths even infiltrating their instruments and hair during the performance. Despite the challenges, the crowd remained engaged throughout the night, creating a memorable atmosphere.
The abundance of moths was a result of the spruce budworm outbreak in Newfoundland and Labrador, a cyclical event that had been anticipated for some time. The outbreak, which began to escalate a few years ago, poses a significant threat to the region’s forests. Spruce budworm infestations can last for over a decade, causing extensive damage to tree populations by consuming needles and new growth buds.
Lloyd Hollett, owner of the Newfoundland Insectarium, emphasized the unprecedented scale of the current infestation, extending beyond the Humber Valley. While the moth population is expected to decline due to their short lifespan, concerns remain about the potential impact in the coming years.
