U.S. President Donald Trump undertook a covert military journey from Turkey last month, involving a maneuver where he switched planes using a catering truck due to an Iranian threat. Initially, the White House stated that Trump was traveling on Air Force One from Turkey to Britain after attending a NATO summit. However, shortly after boarding Air Force One, Trump secretly disembarked via a catering truck and boarded another aircraft bound for Britain, as reported by the Washington Post, citing undisclosed sources.

Trump confirmed the incident, explaining that the Secret Service and military recommended he switch planes due to a perceived threat, which he claimed did not intimidate him. He minimized the perceived risk for the individuals left on the original plane, including White House officials, security personnel, and journalists. Trump disclosed the details to reporters upon his return from an event in Ohio, indicating he had little say in the decision. The President mentioned that while there was a threat, he did not delve into specifics, citing the frequent nature of threats he receives.

The situation arose when Trump chose to fly on a newly refurbished aircraft donated by Qatar to Ankara for the NATO summit but opted to use an older Air Force One for the return journey, leading to scrutiny of the security of the newer aircraft. The first international trip for the new plane sparked inquiries regarding its expenses and safety, coinciding with escalating tensions with Iran, a neighboring country to Turkey.

Before departing Ankara, Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he would switch to an older baby blue Air Force One for the flight to RAF Mildenhall in Britain, allowing U.S. service members stationed at the base to tour the new plane. Journalists traveling with Trump were misled into believing they were on the older Air Force One, which served as a diversion. They were instructed to keep their window shades closed, a directive also followed by some White House staff who were under the impression that the President was onboard.

When questioned by reporters about the need to keep the shades down during the flight, Trump suggested it was due to safety concerns, remarking that it was likely a risky journey. He added a rhetorical question, implying that if he was taking the risk, so were they.
