A Saskatchewan-based content creator is facing challenges after Facebook unexpectedly removed her page, causing distress. Ashlyn George, the owner of The Lost Girl’s Guide to Finding the World, a popular travel brand, has been struggling since Thursday to reinstate her 22,000-follower Facebook page, which Meta suspended due to alleged impersonation violations.
Expressing her frustration, George mentioned that losing her platform, where she shared adventure stories and photos for 13 years, was disheartening and worrisome. Despite maintaining consistent content and denying any impersonation, she suspects that past harassment may have led to her page being reported by another user.
Feeling somewhat powerless, George pointed out the inconsistency of the appeal option on Facebook and the challenges of dealing with Meta’s customer service, primarily operated by AI agents. Her account experienced multiple activations and deactivations, with the latest suspension still in effect as of Tuesday.
To regain access to proper customer service support, George highlighted the necessity of Meta Verified subscription for creators. Lack of this service could lead to difficulties in resolving issues promptly, potentially resulting in permanent account loss.
The use of AI service agents has become prevalent in various platforms, but David Gerhard, a computer science professor, highlighted their limitations. Despite advancements, he believes AI agents will always lack the empathy and reasoning abilities of humans, making them inherently flawed for resolving complex issues effectively.
George advised fellow content creators to diversify their online presence beyond social media platforms to mitigate risks associated with sudden takedowns. She emphasized the importance of maintaining dedicated websites and email lists as alternative communication channels.
Despite the setbacks with Facebook, George continues to engage with her audience through her website and Instagram account. She encourages others in similar situations to establish robust online platforms to safeguard their businesses from potential disruptions caused by platform policies.
As she navigates through this challenging period, George remains optimistic about utilizing alternative platforms to stay connected with her followers and preserve her brand’s presence online.
