A teenager from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, has showcased impressive goal-scoring skills in high school soccer. Amare Boateng, aged 17, concluded a remarkable season with the London Whitecaps by topping the Ontario Player Development League (OPDL) scoring charts for his age group with 23 goals in just 20 games. Boateng, a talented striker and student at St. Mary’s College, attributed his success to strong teamwork and chemistry within his squad.
The OPDL is highly esteemed as Ontario’s premier youth development soccer league, featuring elite players aged 13-17 who have opportunities to attract attention from professional teams or secure university scholarships. Boateng likened the league to a semi-professional level due to its fast-paced nature, emphasizing the intense competition during practices as players strive for their positions on the field.
As a feeder program for Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps, where notable players like Alphonso Davies have emerged, Boateng aspires to play there in the future. His passion for soccer was ignited during his childhood days at the Sault United Football Academy, instilling a competitive drive instilled by his father and family. Boateng’s exceptional talent for pressuring opponents, ball hunger, and goal-scoring prowess has been recognized by his coaches and observers.
Expressing gratitude for the unwavering support of his hometown coaches in Sault Ste. Marie, Boateng acknowledged their role in his development and success. Looking ahead to his graduation from St. Mary’s and considering options to join League1 Ontario or possibly pursue opportunities in Europe, Boateng remains determined to elevate his game and make his community proud with his achievements.
