Toronto’s Summer McIntosh began her races at the Pan Pacific swimming championships in Irvine, Calif., by securing second place in the women’s 200-meter freestyle. The 19-year-old, a newcomer to the event, finished with a time of 1:53.86, just shy of Australia’s Lani Pallister, who set a championship record of 1:53.67. New Zealand’s Erika Fairweather claimed third place with a time of 1:55.05 at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center.

Summer McIntosh’s performance was analyzed by CBC Sports analyst Byron MacDonald, who expressed confidence in her potential for improvement despite not frequently competing in the 200 free. Pallister initially led McIntosh by a small margin but McIntosh took the lead at the 100-meter mark before being overtaken by Pallister, who ultimately clinched the victory.

Reflecting on McIntosh’s previous experiences, MacDonald highlighted her setback at the 2023 world championships and emphasized the learning opportunities it provided. McIntosh, primarily a 400 freestyler, had not participated in the 200 free internationally since the 2023 world championships but showcased her determination in the competition.

Moving forward, McIntosh is set to compete in additional events at the championships, such as the 200 individual medley, 400 free, and 400 IM. Despite narrowly missing her target time in the 200 free final, McIntosh remains a formidable presence in the world of swimming, holding multiple world records and demonstrating resilience in the face of challenges.
