In St. Vital, Winnipeg, police have reported an incident where a child was forcibly grabbed by a stranger in an elementary school restroom. A 28-year-old man, identified as a registered sex offender, is facing charges of assault and forcible confinement following the incident.
The authorities were alerted around 1:30 p.m. when an unknown adult entered the school premises and confronted a child, as revealed by Const. Dani McKinnon during a press briefing on Friday. McKinnon emphasized that the perpetrator was entirely unfamiliar to the school community.
Although the school’s name was not disclosed by McKinnon, a communication sent to parents by Darwin School’s principal, Erin Enns, pinpointed the kindergarten to Grade 8 institution situated just west of St. Vital Centre as the site of the alarming occurrence. Subsequently, the school was put on hold and secure status, indicating the locking of external doors.
According to police investigations, the man clandestinely entered a washroom stall within the school premises. It was when a student exited another stall that the man seized the child. However, the quick-witted student managed to break free from the perpetrator and promptly informed a teacher of the distressing episode.
While the child did not sustain any physical injuries and did not require medical attention, McKinnon refrained from divulging specific details about the student, including age and gender. The suspect managed to escape before law enforcement arrived, but a vigilant witness tailed him to a nearby mall on St. Mary’s Road, where he was eventually apprehended with the assistance of mall security.
The arrested individual, Scott William George, aged 28, faces charges of assault, forcible confinement, and two counts of violating restrictions concerning interactions with children. Notably, George has been a registered sex offender since admitting guilt to sexual interference in 2023, receiving a two-year sentence for an offense committed in July 2022 involving inappropriate contact with a minor.
George’s criminal history dates back to 2015 and includes convictions for various offenses like breaking and entering, theft, mischief, and weapons-related crimes. McKinnon emphasized that the prohibition order against George was intended to prevent him from being in contact with children or accessing areas frequented by minors.
The motive behind the incident and the method by which the man gained entry to the school remain undisclosed. McKinnon described the event as deeply disturbing but acknowledged the child’s resilience in handling the situation.
Christian Michalik, the superintendent of Louis Riel School Division, expressed profound concern over the incident’s impact on the school community. While praising the child’s bravery, Michalik indicated that a thorough review of the incident would be undertaken by the division to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Despite existing security measures, Michalik acknowledged that the breach highlighted the need for enhanced vigilance across all schools within the division. Darwin School’s principal, Enns, assured parents in a memo that support services were available for students and staff affected by the incident.
