Russia initiated a series of assaults on Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of at least seven individuals in overnight attacks targeting urban structures and energy facilities. Simultaneously, Ukrainian forces launched an attack in southern Russia, resulting in three casualties and property damage, as per authorities.

These significant offensives coincide with heightened efforts by the U.S. to bring an end to the nearly four-year-long conflict and discussions surrounding a peace proposal brokered by the U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll. The Secretary, who recently joined the U.S. negotiation team, engaged in extensive discussions with Russian representatives in Abu Dhabi, with positive progress reported by U.S. Army Lt.-Col. Jeff Tolbert, a spokesperson for Driscoll.

Details of the ongoing talks were not immediately disclosed, and the composition of the Russian delegation remained unknown.

A statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Telegram revealed that Russia launched 22 missiles and more than 460 drones at Ukraine overnight. Responding to the drone incursion, NATO fighter jets from Romania and Germany were deployed near Romania’s border with Ukraine. The Defence Minister of Romania, Ionut Mosteanu, mentioned that NATO pilots refrained from shooting down the drones to avoid causing ground damage.

The recent airspace violation marked the 13th incident reported by Romania since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Following discussions between U.S. and Ukrainian representatives in Geneva regarding a U.S.-Russia mediated peace plan, hostilities ensued. A delegate from the Ukrainian side, Oleksandr Bevz, described the talks with The Associated Press as “highly productive,” with both sides able to address various issues.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed cautious optimism about the U.S.-brokered peace plan for Ukraine, emphasizing the need for robust security guarantees for Ukraine and an unrestricted Ukrainian military force.

As the conflict intensifies, concerns persist over the evolving U.S. policy towards the war, particularly after a 28-point peace plan surfaced last week, sparking uncertainties among U.S. Congress, Kyiv, and European nations. Macron stressed the importance of a peace agreement that does not compromise Ukraine’s sovereignty or embolden Russia to resume hostilities.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow had not received the updated peace plan, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov indicated a willingness to consider an amended version after coordination with Ukraine and Europe. Lavrov highlighted key modifications to the initial plan, signaling potential adjustments to contentious clauses.

In Ukraine, the Russian strikes inflicted significant damage, disrupting essential services in Kyiv. Residents, including a 90-year-old woman, expressed despair over the ongoing conflict and skepticism towards the proposed peace plan.

The attacks in Ukraine led to casualties in Kyiv, with Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirming fatalities and injuries among residents. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed to have targeted military and energy facilities during the assaults.

In a retaliatory move, Ukrainian drones struck the Russian city of Taganrog, resulting in three fatalities and multiple injuries. Governor Yuri Slyusar reported damage to residential buildings, social facilities, and commercial establishments due to the attack.

Russian air defenses intercepted 249 Ukrainian drones over Russian territories, including Crimea, with a significant number shot down over the Black Sea, as reported by the Russian Defence Ministry.
