Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, condemned an explosion on a critical railway line used for shipments to Ukraine as an unprecedented act of sabotage. Authorities are probing whether the blast on the route between Warsaw and southeastern Poland is linked to Russia, Belarus, or their allies.
Tusk assured that Poland is committed to apprehending the culprits behind the sabotage. The incident, which disrupted aid and weapon deliveries to Ukraine, involved an explosive device detonated on the track. Subsequent investigations uncovered damage to overhead cables on the same line, indicating likely sabotage, as per Polish officials.
NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, affirmed close communication with Polish authorities and awaits the investigation’s results. Western officials have accused Russia and its allies of orchestrating various attacks in Europe since the Ukrainian invasion to destabilize support for Ukraine and sow fear in European nations.
Poland’s Security Services Minister, Tomasz Siemoniak, suggested a high probability that the railway incidents were orchestrated by foreign entities. The damage was reported by a vigilant train driver on Sunday morning, with no injuries despite the disruption to the railway infrastructure.
Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced plans for a thorough examination of the affected railway line to Ukraine. Another train on the same route was halted due to damages to overhead power lines, causing minor disruptions but no injuries to passengers.
In a joint news conference with NATO representatives, Finland’s President Alexander Stubb emphasized the need for European nations to maintain composure amidst alleged Russian disruptions. Stubb cautioned against overreacting, stating that destabilization efforts by Russia through information warfare have become the new normal.
Stubb highlighted the ambiguity between war and peace in the current geopolitical landscape, emphasizing Russia’s dual approach of kinetic warfare in Ukraine and hybrid warfare in Europe. Despite repeated denials by Russia, allegations of sabotage incidents persist, including drone activities near airports and cable disruptions in European waters.
