Carney’s primary focus during the campaign was on engaging with the U.S. administration. Negotiations were progressing towards a potential tariff deal until Trump abruptly terminated the talks after an Ontario government advertisement featuring Ronald Reagan’s anti-tariff message irked him. Trump mentioned that Carney apologized for the ad, which was withdrawn from airing following the backlash.
Trump stated that he appreciates Carney but was firm in his decision not to resume trade discussions with Canada. Poilievre emphasized the importance of strengthening the economy to enhance Canada’s position and fulfill promises of advancing significant projects. He refrained from comparing his approach to Carney’s, stating that current analysis is irrelevant as he is not the prime minister.
