Prime Minister Mark Carney avoided answering questions regarding his recent communication with the U.S. President and responded with a dismissive “who cares?” statement to reporters. Despite this, Carney’s spokesperson mentioned plans for a potential trip to Washington for the FIFA World Cup draw next week, as Canada, the U.S., and Mexico are co-hosting the event in 2026.

The draw for the upcoming soccer tournament will occur at the Kennedy Centre, now under the control of U.S. President Donald Trump. The breakdown in Canada-U.S. trade discussions occurred following Trump’s criticism of Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s anti-tariff campaign invoking Ronald Reagan.

During a press conference in Johannesburg after visiting the Middle East and Africa to strengthen trade relations and meet with G20 leaders, Carney emphasized his focus on developing the federal budget and attracting investments to Canada. Carney’s government has distanced itself from Trump following the trade tensions, pursuing closer relationships with oil-rich Gulf nations and negotiating a trade deal with India.

Conservative leaders criticized Carney’s nonchalant attitude, accusing him of neglecting industries affected by tariffs and failing to secure relief deals. Carney, who previously took a strong stance against American tariffs, is now perceived as more conciliatory, sparking criticism from opponents.

Despite the strained relationship between Canada and the U.S., diplomatic efforts continue, with discussions ongoing in Washington, D.C., to improve ties with Congress. The future of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) requires review next year, and any decision to alter the deal would need approval from the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Efforts to resume tariff negotiations between Canada and the U.S. are crucial, according to New Hampshire Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, who highlighted the negative impact of tariffs on businesses and consumers. The need for constructive trade discussions to strengthen the enduring friendship between the two nations has been emphasized.

Trump’s declining popularity, particularly among independent voters, has been linked to his tariff policies, which have adversely affected various sectors. There is a growing sentiment for the resumption of negotiations to enhance trade ties between the U.S. and Canada.
