Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office confirmed on Wednesday that he will deliver a speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France next month. During his visit, Carney intends to enhance Canada’s relationship with the European Union for the mutual benefit of both parties. Additionally, he will participate in the State of the European Union address by Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, which is considered a significant political event in Europe.

Given the current trade tensions between Canada and the United States, Carney has been working towards strengthening ties with Europe. This effort comes in light of the breakdown in trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington over the weekend, leading to further strain in bilateral relations.

Canada has recently inked multiple partnership agreements with the EU, positioning itself as the first non-European member of Security Action for Europe, which offers €150 billion in defense-related loans. A spokesperson from the European Commission highlighted Carney’s upcoming visit as a testament to the strong bond between Canada and the EU, emphasizing the shared commitment to elevate their partnership amidst global challenges.

In response to the announcement, Conservative deputy leader Melissa Lantsman expressed reservations, suggesting that Carney should prioritize recalling Parliament before engaging with another legislative body abroad. This sentiment was conveyed in a social media post questioning the Prime Minister’s decision to address EU Parliamentarians while refraining from convening the Canadian Parliament, especially amid the perceived state of conflict.
