Planned Parenthood Ottawa is temporarily suspending its front-line programs due to a significant financial shortfall, according to Executive Director Lyra Evans. The organization aims to take the time to evaluate its financial and programmatic circumstances before committing to unsustainable initiatives.
In the previous fiscal year, Planned Parenthood Ottawa exceeded its budget by nearly $100,000, as stated in its 2024 annual report. The organization relies heavily on government and community grants for funding, but many were not renewed for 2025, leading to financial challenges exacerbated by increased program demand.
Earlier this year, all six unionized front-line staff members were laid off, leaving Evans to manage some of the organization’s duties. With the temporary closure, Planned Parenthood Ottawa plans to reassess its offerings and better address community needs.
Despite facing a challenging financial situation, Evans remains hopeful that fundraising efforts and support from historical donors will help the organization reopen in some capacity in 2026. However, it is likely that only a few of the laid-off workers will be rehired due to the financial constraints.
Chantel Mullings, a labor relations specialist with the Canadian Office and Professional Employees (COPE) union, expressed concerns about the layoffs and the impact on the dedicated staff members who are passionate about their work. Mullings also highlighted the issue of Evans taking on the responsibilities of unionized employees, which may have influenced the decision to temporarily halt operations.
