Human rights organizations are denouncing the deaths of two Palestinian individuals in the occupied West Bank at the hands of Israeli security forces. According to footage capturing the incident, the victims seemed to be surrendering and unarmed before being fatally shot.

The United Nations human rights office spokesperson, Jeremy Laurence, expressed shock at the incident and called for an independent investigation into what he described as an apparent summary execution. The two men, Al-Muntasir Abdullah, 26, and Yousef Asasa, 37, were reportedly seen unarmed and surrendering during a raid in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, as shown in Palestine TV news footage.

The Israeli military and police have stated that an investigation has been launched following the incident, explaining that shots were fired towards suspects who had exited a building. The brother of one of the deceased men, Mahmoud Asasa, condemned the act, emphasizing that surrendering individuals should be arrested rather than brutally eliminated.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group claimed that one of the slain men was a commander, while the other was a fighter. Israeli authorities indicated that the two individuals were wanted and associated with a terror network in the Jenin area but did not provide specific details or evidence of their alleged involvement.

Laurence highlighted a surge in Palestinian deaths at the hands of Israeli security forces and settlers in the West Bank, stressing the need for accountability and adherence to due process. Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir expressed full support for the military and police involved in the shooting, stating that terrorists should be eliminated.

Calling for international intervention, Sarit Michaeli from the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem emphasized the responsibility of Israeli policymakers for such incidents. The Palestinian Authority’s Foreign Ministry has condemned the shooting as an extrajudicial killing and a war crime.

The recent attack in Jenin is part of a series of Israeli operations across northern West Bank cities, with escalating violence following a truce agreement in Gaza. The UN has documented numerous Palestinian deaths in the West Bank and East Jerusalem attributed to Israeli forces or settlers, including children, emphasizing the need for accountability and independent investigations.
