The New York Sirens are embarking on a fresh start in their third season in the PWHL as the only team that has never participated in a playoff game. Their new beginning proved successful as they defeated the Ottawa Charge 4-0 in their season opener.
Despite the departure of four top scorers and their long-time starting goaltender Corinne Schroder, who joined the Seattle Torrent, the Sirens showcased their strength with Kayle Osborne taking over the goaltending duties and securing a shutout against the Ottawa Charge.
Kayle Osborne expressed confidence in the team’s performance, stating, “We’re a young group and demonstrated our capability in this league tonight.”
The Sirens’ offense shined in the game, with forward Taylor Girard scoring a hat trick and Maja Nylen Persson sealing the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minutes.
New York’s first overall draft pick, Kristýna Kaltounková, added a physical presence to the team but also received a penalty early in the game for boarding. The game saw physicality and penalties, including New York captain Micah Zandee-Hart being ejected for a cross-check.
Despite strong goaltending from Gwyneth Philips of the Ottawa Charge, the Sirens broke the silence in the third period with Wheeler and Girard finding the back of the net. Girard completed her hat trick, and the Sirens secured a 4-0 win.
Kayle Osborne, who has a perfect record in Ottawa games, expressed gratitude for the support from friends and family in attendance.
On the other hand, the Ottawa Charge faced scoring challenges, continuing from the previous season, where they struggled to find the back of the net. The loss to the Sirens initiates a series of home games for the Charge, while the Sirens will hit the road for their upcoming matches.
