Nicole Mortillaro: The deepfake video was quite shocking. How worried are you about the spread of misinformation through such means?
Neil deGrasse Tyson: The increasing sophistication of deepfakes poses a significant threat, potentially leading to a demise of the internet as we know it. If unchecked, deepfake technology could undermine democracy and civilization itself, especially when used in politically sensitive contexts.
NM: Do you believe scientific literacy and critical thinking are at risk?
NDT: It’s not that critical thinking is declining, but the consequences of lacking it are more severe now, affecting personal health and security. There’s a pressing need to prioritize critical thinking education to address these challenges effectively.
NM: Shifting focus to space exploration, what aspects of the universe keep you pondering at night?
NDT: I often wonder if humanity possesses the intellectual capacity to fully comprehend the universe. Are we limited by our own cognitive abilities, or would we require a more advanced intelligence, such as that of extraterrestrial beings, to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos?
In a reflection on the rapid advancements in astronomy, Mortillaro brought up the discovery that distant celestial objects visible through telescopes were galaxies, a revelation made just a century ago.
