Montreal’s public transit authority is racing against time to mitigate the impact of two upcoming strikes. The authority is actively negotiating with its unions to minimize disruptions as a 24-hour strike is set to halt bus and Metro services this weekend. Additionally, a month-long reduction in service hours is scheduled to begin, affecting commuters daily until late November.

During the strikes, bus and Metro services will operate on limited schedules, with buses running during specific morning and afternoon rush hours and night hours. Metro services will also have restricted operating times. Despite the disruptions, adapted transit services will continue as usual.

The labor tribunal’s approval of the bus drivers’ strike has put further pressure on negotiations. The transit authority is engaged in discussions with the unions to enhance essential services and avoid prolonged strikes. However, challenges persist, particularly regarding wage increases and outsourcing demands, as the STM faces financial constraints.

As negotiations continue, the STM remains committed to exploring all options, including mediation and arbitration if necessary. The union’s concerns about outsourcing and cost-saving measures add complexity to the discussions, with both parties striving to find common ground.

The looming strikes have caused uncertainties for commuters, prompting the STM to advise checking their website for the latest updates on service disruptions. Despite the challenges ahead, efforts are ongoing to reach agreements and minimize the impact on public transportation in Montreal.
