U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, previously a staunch supporter of Donald Trump but now a critic of the former president, announced her resignation from Congress effective January. Greene, in a video exceeding 10 minutes shared online, detailed her reasons for stepping down, citing her continuous unpopularity in Washington, D.C., and feeling like she never truly belonged.
The decision to resign came after a public fallout between Greene and Trump in recent months. Greene openly criticized Trump on various issues, including his position on documents related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, foreign policy matters, and healthcare policies. In response, Trump labeled her a “traitor” and “wacky,” vowing to support a rival candidate against her in the upcoming re-election bid.
Despite a close association with the Republican president since she entered politics in 2020, Greene highlighted her enduring loyalty to Trump in her video while also expressing disagreement on certain matters. She emphasized the importance of reciprocal loyalty and the freedom to vote according to conscience and represent constituents’ interests, emphasizing that the role of a “representative” implies such responsibilities.
Initially aligned with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement, Greene quickly gained attention in Capitol Hill for her unconventional views and affiliation with the QAnon conspiracy theory and white supremacist groups. While she faced opposition from party leaders, Trump publicly supported her, praising her as a “real WINNER!”
While initially controversial, Greene proved to be an effective legislator, collaborating with then-GOP leader Kevin McCarthy, who later became House Speaker. Regarded as a trusted voice on the conservative side until McCarthy’s removal in 2023, Greene developed a reputation for her legislative skills.
In an interview with ABC News, Trump welcomed Greene’s decision to resign, deeming it “great news for the country.” Her House ally, Representative Thomas Massie, commended her as a model representative. On the other hand, former Republican House member Barbara Comstock, a Trump critic, praised Greene for refusing to tolerate mistreatment from Trump and facing threats, ultimately choosing to step down.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Greene’s shift from a Trump loyalist to a critic, pointing out discrepancies between her rhetoric and actions. Ocasio-Cortez highlighted Greene’s voting record, accusing her of supporting policies that undermine healthcare and promote corrupt practices.
Greene’s resignation is set to take effect on January 5, marking the end of her tenure in Congress.
