The Lansdowne 2.0 development project, with a budget of nearly $419 million, has received an 8-3 vote in favor from the finance and corporate services committee. The decision followed an extensive meeting involving numerous participants providing input on the proposed redevelopment plan. The project aims to enhance accessibility within the premises, revamp the hockey arena, event center, and the north-side stands, and introduce new residential areas.

Advocates argue that these renovations are essential to maintain the Glebe site’s suitability for hosting major sports and entertainment events. On the other hand, critics have raised concerns about the financial structure and the prolonged partnership with the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG), the organization behind the Ottawa Redblacks and the Ottawa 67s teams.

Of particular concern has been the uncertainty surrounding the continued presence of the two sports teams at Lansdowne beyond their existing commitment until 2032. Roger Greenberg, OSEG’s executive chairman and managing partner, reassured that both the Ottawa Redblacks and the Ottawa 67s are anchored at Lansdowne, emphasizing the importance of their long-standing connection to the site.

In response to apprehensions, Capital ward Coun. Shawn Menard proposed a motion requiring OSEG to maintain both teams at Lansdowne until at least 2042, which was subsequently approved. Another motion by Menard increased the portion of air rights profits allocated to affordable housing from $9.75 million to $22.75 million.

To cover the total project debt of $694 million, the city plans to allocate $17.4 million annually, partially funded by a raise in the municipal accommodation tax (MAT) on hotels from five to six percent. Kitchissippi Coun. Jeff Leiper highlighted the significance of the MAT increase in offsetting the project’s financial burden, although he suggested adjustments to ensure its value grows with future economic changes.

Despite differing opinions and deliberations, the majority of councillors voted in favor of the Lansdowne 2.0 development plan, which is now set for a final vote at the upcoming full city council meeting.
