Members of Nunavut’s Legislative Assembly have chosen John Main as the next premier of Nunavut. Main, aged 45, is a three-time MLA from Arviat who is fluent in Inuktitut and previously served as Nunavut’s health minister. He emerged victorious over David Akeeagok in a confidential ballot on Tuesday, marking the first time Nunavut will have a non-Inuk leader.

During the selection process, Main and Akeeagok fielded questions from colleagues for about four hours, highlighting their relevant experience and outlining their priorities for the upcoming four-year term. Main emphasized the importance of partnerships and expressed his intention to collaborate closely with various entities such as governments, Indigenous organizations, regional Inuit associations, and private enterprises. He underscored the significance of building strong relationships, citing it as a notable achievement in his political career.

Main articulated his plans to diversify the territory’s revenue streams, including exploring opportunities in natural gas. Additionally, he proposed initiatives like implementing a virtual-first healthcare approach, establishing an elder van program, and introducing on-the-land treatment programs in all communities. Addressing the pressing issue of unemployment, Main pledged to focus on education and job creation within Nunavummuit communities.

Main, who represents Arviat North-Whale Cove and has held positions such as minister of health and minister responsible for suicide prevention, will soon allocate cabinet roles among the newly elected members. The cabinet includes Janet Pitsiulaaq Brewster, Gwen Healey Akearok, George Hickes, Annie Tattuinee, Cecile Nelvana Lyall, Craig Simailak, Brian Koonoo, and David Akeeagok.

David Joanasie, the MLA for South Baffin, was elected as the Speaker during the leadership forum. The swearing-in ceremony for the new premier and cabinet ministers is scheduled to take place at Nunavut’s Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

Nunavut and the N.W.T. are known for their consensus government systems, with only 21 of the 22 electorates represented at the Nunavut Legislative Assembly. The Aggu riding, encompassing the northern part of Igloolik, will hold a supplementary election on December 15 due to a tie between the candidates.

The forthcoming days will see the official inauguration of the new premier and cabinet ministers, marking the beginning of their leadership roles in Nunavut.
