Humanitarian groups operating in North Darfur, Sudan, are encountering security challenges and dwindling resources. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has raised concerns, warning that if additional funding and access to aid are not secured, civilians could face a more severe crisis. The IOM highlighted a substantial increase in the displacement of Sudanese individuals due to reported mass killings, ethnic conflicts, and sexual violence in El Fasher and nearby areas, resulting in over 90,000 people being displaced.
The IOM emphasized the urgent need for more funding to address the humanitarian repercussions of the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The agency reported that warehouses in North Darfur are nearly empty, with aid convoys encountering significant security risks and access limitations for aid distribution.
The situation has led to a critical point where humanitarian operations are on the verge of collapse, according to the IOM. Urgent appeals have been made for increased funding and immediate, sustained, and secure access to prevent a worsening humanitarian crisis.
Recent events, including the RSF’s capture of El Fasher, have resulted in loss of life and forced tens of thousands to flee, with reports of atrocities committed by the paramilitary force. Displaced individuals have been facing challenges in reaching overcrowded camps, such as Tawila, where they are experiencing shortages of basic necessities like food, water, and medical assistance.
Aid group Médecins sans frontières (MSF) highlighted alarming rates of malnutrition among children under five in the displacement camps, underscoring the dire situation. The conflict has also spread to other regions like Western Darfur and Kordofan, prompting more displacements.
Efforts to establish ceasefires have been ongoing, with various proposals put forward, but sustainable peace remains elusive. Reports of widespread sexual violence have emerged, with women recounting harrowing experiences of violence and loss. The situation is dire, with millions facing food insecurity and pervasive risks, including sexual violence, while seeking basic sustenance.
The conflict in Sudan has taken a heavy toll, resulting in a significant loss of life and displacement. The need for immediate intervention and sustained support to address the escalating humanitarian crisis is paramount to prevent further devastation.
