Donations for survivors of the fire have reached 900 million Hong Kong dollars ($161 million Cdn) as of Monday, with a significant outpouring of public support evident through the placement of flowers, cards, and tributes at a makeshift memorial near the affected buildings. Loretta Loh, expressing solidarity, highlighted the community’s unity in times of adversity, stating, “When something happens, we come out to help each other.”
The Wang Fuk Court complex in Tai Po housed around 4,600 residents, with ongoing efforts by the Hong Kong police force’s Disaster Victim Identification Unit to search and identify victims within the affected buildings. Despite challenges in the identification process, additional bodies were recovered on Monday, contributing to the total count of casualties. The government, in conjunction with private donations, has allocated funds for rebuilding homes, offering long-term support to victims, and providing immediate assistance such as cash subsidies and housing arrangements for survivors.
Concerns over the construction netting had been raised by residents prior to the fire, prompting multiple inspections by labor officials, who had issued warnings to contractors regarding fire safety compliance. Subsequent arrests made by anti-corruption authorities and police, including individuals associated with a construction company, have heightened public scrutiny, with calls for government accountability gaining traction.
