In 2022, the globe witnessed a series of devastating floods in Pakistan caused by melting glaciers, resulting in the displacement of a significant portion of the country’s population and severe damage to crucial power infrastructure.

In response to the crisis, a shift towards clean energy, particularly solar power, gained momentum. The province of Sindh led the way by incorporating solar panels into reconstructed homes, with many individuals directly importing panels from China. The enthusiasm for solar energy in Pakistan was evident as the country added a remarkable 22 gigawatts of solar power in 2024, surpassing the total installed capacity of Canada.

This surge reflects a broader trend of increasing adoption of renewable energy worldwide, especially in developing nations leveraging the declining costs of solar and wind power technologies.

Simultaneously, the United States, a major oil producer, is intensifying its focus on fossil fuels, diverging from the global momentum towards cleaner energy sources. At the recent UN climate summit, COP30 in Belem, Brazil, discussions around transitioning away from fossil fuels took center stage, highlighting the growing international push towards sustainable energy solutions.

While a concrete deal was not reached, the prominence of this topic underscores the global consensus on the necessity of reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Approximately 80 countries endorsed a proposal for a transition deal, including key European economies and nations vulnerable to climate change impacts.

Andreas Sieber, a policy expert at 350.org, emphasized the economic and environmental benefits of green technologies, citing China’s substantial economic growth from green initiatives and India’s ambitious plans for solar energy development.

The world faces a critical juncture with escalating fossil fuel emissions pushing global warming perilously close to the 1.5°C threshold outlined in the Paris Agreement. Concurrently, renewable energy sources are gaining ground, with renewables surpassing coal in electricity generation for the first time in 2025.

China’s significant contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, predominantly from coal-fired power plants, underscores the urgency for transitioning to cleaner energy alternatives. The rapid growth of renewable power capacity globally signifies a fundamental shift towards a more sustainable energy landscape.

Despite challenges, the transition to renewables is hindered by substantial subsidies for fossil fuels worldwide, impeding the faster adoption of cleaner energy solutions.

The absence of the United States at COP30 has paved the way for a multi-polar leadership model in climate action, with countries like China, Brazil, and India taking on more prominent roles in driving environmental agendas.

Looking ahead, efforts to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels will require a roadmap with clear milestones and increased financial support for clean energy investments. The evolving energy landscape, fueled by the global shift towards renewables, underscores the imperative for countries to adapt and embrace sustainable energy practices for a greener future.
