On a bustling Wednesday at Potluck Flavours, our restaurant in Falmouth, Jamaica, my world shattered with a phone call. The news of my beloved brother Dan’s untimely death left me in disbelief and despair. Dan, a victim of senseless violence, was fatally attacked by five men seeking work on his construction project. Tragically, his murder went unnoticed amidst the high crime rates in Jamaica.

Living in a country marred by crime and violence, my family had faced numerous close calls, including armed robberies and shootings. However, Dan’s murder struck a deep fear in me, prompting a decision to seek safety elsewhere. With qualifications as a chef, I seized an opportunity in St. John’s, Canada, through a work permit program, leaving behind my family in pursuit of a safer life.

The transition to Canada was far from easy. Struggling to find stable housing and faced with unwelcoming remarks, I navigated the challenges of a new culture while grieving the loss of my brother. Despite setbacks and discrimination, I persevered, driven by a mother’s determination to reunite my family and build a better future.

Upon their arrival three years later, the struggle continued as I adapted to a new life in Newfoundland, where I encountered barriers as a Black woman in a predominantly white community. Despite the hurdles, my passion for cooking became a bridge between my Jamaican roots and Newfoundland’s traditions, creating a culinary fusion that resonated with both cultures.

In my journey as an executive chef and entrepreneur, I prioritize creating a supportive work environment where respect and inclusivity thrive. By advocating for compassionate leadership and equality, I aim to empower others and foster a sense of belonging in my kitchen. Through my resilience and dedication, I have found a new purpose in inspiring immigrant women to navigate challenges with resilience and hope.

As I continue to share my story through writing and culinary art, my mission remains to guide others through adversity and empower them to build a brighter future. Despite the hardships endured, the journey has been worth it for the safety, opportunities, and hope my children now have. Embracing the pieces of my past, I strive to create beauty from the ashes and inspire others to do the same.
