The federal government revealed this week the five key projects it plans to expedite. Energy Minister Tim Hodgson is defending the list against Conservative criticisms that some projects were already well underway. Hodgson likened the projects to being close to scoring a touchdown in football, emphasizing the need for successful execution.

Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled the initial set of projects, including expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) production in B.C., upgrading the Port of Montreal, and constructing a copper mine in Saskatchewan. Carney noted that the project proponents have completed significant groundwork, such as consultations with Indigenous communities and meeting regulatory standards, but require additional support to proceed.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre expressed dissatisfaction, claiming Carney had not delivered permits for new projects during his tenure. Hodgson responded by highlighting the proponents’ satisfaction with inclusion on the list, emphasizing the importance of seeing projects through to completion.

In relation to the B.C. LNG initiative, Chief Councillor Maureen Nyce of Haisla Nation welcomed the federal government’s focus on the project, citing the need for long-lasting job opportunities and economic growth in the community. Similarly, Dan Myerson, CEO of Foran Mining, which owns the Saskatchewan copper mine project, emphasized the importance of streamlined processes for obtaining permits to facilitate project expansion.

Carney also mentioned additional projects that require further development, such as the Alto High-Speed Rail connecting Toronto to Québec City. Alto CEO Martin Imbleau expressed optimism about the project’s future and highlighted ongoing consultations with stakeholders.

Carney’s announcement provides clarity on timelines for project approvals and signals the government’s commitment to expediting key infrastructure projects. The next set of projects is expected to be finalized before the Grey Cup in Winnipeg on Nov. 16.
