The federal government is allocating funds for a wellness center in Kings County, described by some as a unique opportunity. Residents of Souris have been advocating for a new wellness facility, and the SeaRoots Alliance has played a key role in securing federal support for the project. Ashley Sherbanuk, a member of SeaRoots, emphasized the center’s focus on community, recreation, and education, citing the current lack of necessary infrastructure in the area.
While the final design is still in progress following summer consultations, the project is expected to feature amenities such as an NHL-sized ice rink, a walking track, a library, and a multi-purpose gym. The envisioned wellness center aims to cater to individuals of all age groups within the community.
Megan Cheverie, the treasurer of SeaRoots Alliance, expressed excitement about the project, labeling it a rare opportunity for the local community. She anticipates that the center will not only benefit residents but also attract more people to the region. Kent MacDonald, the MP for Cardigan, hailed the initiative as a significant investment that will offer diverse learning and recreational opportunities, especially for seniors.
Dennis McNally, another board member, shared the enthusiasm, expressing eagerness to commence construction on the facility. He acknowledged the substantial effort required for a project of this scale, including the crucial decision of selecting a suitable location. McNally humorously mentioned keeping a shovel in his truck at all times in readiness for groundbreaking, underscoring the meticulous planning needed for such a substantial undertaking.
