Marcus Ericsson clinched victory at the inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy in Markham through two crucial passes. Initially, Ericsson and teammate Will Power made contact while Ericsson was executing a late-race maneuver. Subsequently, Ericsson overtook Romain Grosjean with four laps remaining on the Markham street circuit to secure his fifth career IndyCar win.
Reflecting on his win, Ericsson attributed it to their superior speed, emphasizing that they had the best-performing car during the race. Grosjean finished in second place, marking his first top-five finish of the season, while Power claimed third and current driver standings leader Alex Palou settled for fourth.
Ericsson, Power, and Kyle Kirkwood, who ranks second in the standings, are all teammates under Andretti Global.
Following Kirkwood’s crash on the 53rd lap, the Andretti Global team strategized to target Palou to prevent him from increasing his points lead and securing his fifth IndyCar title. Team principal Ron Ruzewski highlighted the importance of minimizing Palou’s points advantage to keep Kirkwood in contention.
Despite their strategic approach, a miscommunication led to an incident where Power inadvertently impeded Ericsson during a passing attempt. Nevertheless, the race outcome remained unchanged.
Palou garnered 32 points, extending his lead over Kirkwood to 133 points in the standings. Ericsson then focused on overtaking Grosjean, who struggled due to fuel and tire wear towards the end of the race.
Notwithstanding Grosjean’s challenges, Ericsson acknowledged the difficulty of passing him, especially given the tight track conditions. Louis Foster secured pole position after setting the fastest lap times in practice and qualifying.
Predicting chaos on the 3.52-kilometer Markham road course, Foster’s pre-race forecast proved accurate as he crashed early in the race. Multiple caution periods ensued, resulting in several cars being forced off the track due to collisions, with 11 cars failing to finish the race.
Markham hosted its first IndyCar race this year following the event’s relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, where it had been held for over three decades. The race schedule was condensed due to a delayed track completion, leading to practice and qualifying sessions being held on the same day.
Ericsson commended the track layout and the enthusiastic fan turnout, despite the initial challenges faced during the event’s debut in Markham. Looking ahead, Ericsson expressed confidence that future races at the venue would run more smoothly.
