Owen Goodman has always felt a strong connection to Canada, despite being born in England. In his pursuit to play for the Canadian men’s national soccer team, he faced challenges related to his citizenship status.

Recently, the 21-year-old goalkeeper, who spent a significant part of his childhood in Alliston, Ont., was pleasantly surprised when his immigration lawyer from Toronto requested a Zoom call. Initially expecting routine updates on his citizenship application, Goodman was overjoyed to learn that his childhood residency in Canada had granted him Canadian citizenship.

Excited about this newfound status, Goodman is currently in Toronto for his debut senior international window with the national team. His journey to Canadian citizenship culminated in a heartwarming moment when he completed the final step by taking his Oath of Citizenship in Toronto after rushing from England, where he is currently on loan at Huddersfield Town.

Goodman’s dedication to representing Canada was evident as he declined an offer to play for Nigeria’s national team, emphasizing his commitment to his Canadian roots. His passion for the game and his aspirations for the future, including the upcoming World Cup, reflect his determination and talent as a goalkeeper.

As the Canadian team contemplates its goalkeeping options for the World Cup, Goodman’s presence adds depth to the roster, positioning him as a promising talent for future tournaments. Despite the competitive landscape for the starting goalkeeper position, Goodman remains grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Canadian team and is focused on making the most of every moment on the field.
