In the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk, the skies are filled with drones, making it too risky for military convoys to navigate the contested streets easily. However, a video surfaced on social media during a recent thick fog, depicting a group of Russian soldiers moving through Pokrovsk on motorcycles and in a car with missing doors.

The brief clip shared by Russian military bloggers offered a glimpse into the strategic battleground of Pokrovsk, resembling a scene from a dystopian movie like “Mad Max.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the unfavorable weather conditions were aiding Russia’s attempts to infiltrate the city, which has been under pressure for over a year.

According to front-line maps, Pokrovsk seems on the verge of being captured, with some military experts predicting that Russia will likely take control of Pokrovsk and the nearby city of Myrnohrad. Ukrainian drone operator, known by the callsign Goose, mentioned the increased presence of Russian troops in the area.

In the city that once housed 60,000 residents before the invasion, Russia is employing a pincer-like movement to encircle Pokrovsk from the south and northeast. The objective is to disrupt Ukraine’s supply lines and gain a foothold to advance further north into the Donetsk region.

The urban area of Pokrovsk is a grey zone, constantly shifting between Russian and Ukrainian control. Both sides rely heavily on drones for surveillance and reconnaissance. Ukraine’s infantry has been adapting to the drone threat by dispersing into small teams and avoiding the use of armored vehicles to reduce visibility.

Despite the city being mostly in ruins and evacuation advisories issued, around 1,000 residents have chosen to remain in Pokrovsk. Ukrainian forces are striving to maintain control of the city to prevent a retreat into exposed fields, where they would be vulnerable to attacks.

Residents who stayed behind face challenges as the conflict rages on, with some risking their lives in defiance of evacuation orders. Efforts are being made to protect civilians, but the situation remains precarious in the embattled city of Pokrovsk.
