A recent cyberattack on French supermarkets resulted in the spoilage of food in hundreds of fridges, highlighting the risks associated with internet-connected systems and devices, according to cybersecurity experts. The attack targeted centralized control systems that regulate fridge temperatures remotely, allowing hackers to raise temperatures, causing food spoilage and potential fire hazards.

Authorities in Paris are investigating the cybercrime incident to assess the extent of the damage and identify the perpetrators. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and there has been no ransom demand reported.

The affected fridges were connected to the internet through a centralized panel, enabling remote monitoring and adjustments of temperature settings. The cybersecurity agency ANSSI in France indicated that control panels from companies like Danfoss, Copeland, and Dixell were targeted in the attack.

Danfoss mentioned that the impacted units had outdated firmware, making them susceptible to exploitation. A cybersecurity firm, Claroty, had previously identified vulnerabilities in Danfoss’s firmware, which could be exploited by hackers to gain unauthorized access. Danfoss released a patch to address the vulnerability and encouraged users to update their systems promptly.

The incident underscores the importance of promptly implementing security updates to prevent cyberattacks. Cybersecurity experts emphasize the need for vigilance, especially in maintaining the security of internet-connected devices. Such attacks on critical infrastructure, like the food distribution system, have become increasingly common, posing significant risks to food security.

As technology continues to advance and more devices become interconnected, ensuring robust cybersecurity measures and rapid response to cyber incidents are essential. The incident in France serves as a reminder of the growing cybersecurity threats in an increasingly digitized world.
