The CEO of ArcelorMittal Dofasco expressed strong support for the recent government initiatives aimed at bolstering the steel industry. Ron Bedard praised Canadian leaders for actively engaging with steel mills nationwide to address industry concerns. Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled a comprehensive plan to aid the steel and lumber sectors, which have been adversely affected by the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Carney’s plan involves restricting steel imports from countries without free-trade agreements with Canada at a minimal tariff rate to boost demand for Canadian steel. Additionally, the government plans to facilitate the purchase of Canadian steel by slashing interprovincial freight rates by 50% starting in the spring.
Following the imposition of 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum in March, which were later doubled to 50% in June by Trump, Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu acknowledged the challenges faced by steel producers and workers. Sidhu highlighted the significant impact of U.S. tariffs on communities like Hamilton and commended the swift actions taken by the Carney government to safeguard the steel sector and create long-term opportunities.
The well-being of the steel sector in Hamilton, a hub for major manufacturers such as Stelco and ArcelorMittal Dofasco, has been a top concern. Local officials emphasized the reliance of Hamilton families on the Canadian steel industry and lauded the government’s efforts to protect jobs and ensure a prosperous future for the community.
ArcelorMittal Dofasco, employing 4,500 individuals in Hamilton, has maintained its workforce of 10,000 without layoffs due to tariffs. Bedard was acknowledged by Carney for his leadership in supporting the government’s measures. The close collaboration between Bedard’s company and the government was evident in previous interactions, including visits by industry ministers and discussions on trade-related matters.
Keanin Loomis, head of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, noted that the government’s responsiveness to industry feedback was reflected in the support measures announced. Loomis emphasized the importance of managing the implications of increased demand for Canadian steel and highlighted the necessity of aligning policies to benefit communities like Hamilton.
