As G7 foreign ministers gear up for a meeting in Ontario’s Niagara Region, relatives of hotel proprietor Jimmy Lai and the mayor of Niagara-on-the-Lake are appealing for the release of the pro-democracy advocate from a Hong Kong prison.
Lai, the owner of Vintage Hotels with properties across the region, was detained in 2020 and is currently held at Lai Chi Kok prison. He is a British and Hong Kong citizen and the founder of the now-closed pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily.
Expressing concerns, Lai’s niece, Erica Lepp, residing in Niagara-on-the-Lake, remarked to CBC News that her uncle’s actions are comparable to daily practices in their home country, emphasizing his strong ties to Canada.
Mayor Gary Zalepa of Niagara-on-the-Lake highlighted Lai’s positive impact on the community in a public letter issued on Nov. 3, praising the contributions made by Lai and his family through economic growth and heritage property restoration.
Zalepa emphasized the importance of fair treatment under the law, supporting Lai’s release and reaching out to Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand ahead of the G7 ministers’ meeting.
Facing charges under China’s national security law, Lai’s trial began in December 2023 and concluded in August, with potential life imprisonment if convicted. Reports indicated health concerns during the trial, with Lai experiencing heart issues, furthering worries about his well-being.
U.S. President Donald Trump recently advocated for Lai’s release to Chinese President Xi Jinping, suggesting potential benefits to U.S.-Chinese relations and China’s international image.
Lepp expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from Mayor Zalepa and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, highlighting the importance of continuing advocacy for Lai’s cause and raising awareness of his situation.
In a plea for Lai’s release, Carney reiterated Canada’s commitment to press freedom and humanitarian principles, emphasizing the need to stand up for individuals like Lai who champion democracy and freedom of expression.
As support grows for Lai’s release, Lepp stressed the urgency of the situation, hoping for a reunion between Lai and his family after years of separation.
