Goalkeeper Lea Palacio and forward Esther Brossard have been selected to lead the Canadian team at the upcoming FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup in the Philippines. The tournament, featuring 16 teams, will take place from November 21 to December 7 in Pasig City, Metropolitan Manila. Canada finds itself in Group B, alongside tough competitors Spain, Thailand, and Colombia.

Spain, the reigning champion of the UEFA Women’s Futsal Championship, poses a strong challenge, while Thailand and Colombia have also showcased their prowess in recent regional competitions. However, Canada made a significant impact by clinching the CONCACAF W Futsal Championship earlier this year in Guatemala, securing their ticket to the World Cup by defeating Mexico in a thrilling penalty shootout.

Coach Alexandre Da Rocha expressed pride in the team’s qualification journey, highlighting the desire to continue performing admirably. With a roster of 14 players, including standout performers like Palacio and Brossard, Canada aims to make a mark in the World Cup. The team is set to depart for the Philippines soon for a pre-tournament camp, gearing up to face Colombia, Thailand, and Spain in the group stage matches.

Futsal, a fast-paced indoor sport played with five players on each side, allows for strategic changes during the game. The Canadian squad, featuring a mix of experienced players and new additions like Katerine Delev and Magali Gagne, is looking forward to the challenge ahead. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, where the competition will intensify as teams vie for the prestigious title.

The inaugural FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup marks a significant milestone for female futsal players worldwide, who have long advocated for greater recognition and opportunities in the sport. As Canada prepares to compete on the global stage, the team aims to build on its past successes and showcase their talent and dedication to the game.
