Canadian trade officials are set to convene once again with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington as both sides race to finalize a crucial trade agreement before the impending tariff deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump. Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc’s office confirmed that he, along with chief trade negotiator Janice Charette, will hold discussions with Greer later today. This meeting marks the fourth in a series of high-level engagements between the Canadian and American trade representatives, intensifying since Trump’s threat to impose significant duties on a wide array of Canadian goods, in addition to existing sectoral tariffs. The proposed tariffs are scheduled to take effect on August 19.
Recent reports indicate that the U.S. has tabled a new proposal aimed at reducing some sectoral tariffs; however, the adjustments fall short of Canada’s desired outcomes. Additionally, American negotiators are pushing for a comprehensive deal that includes provisions for preferential access to Canadian critical minerals, encompassing security and energy considerations. LeBlanc and Greer are working towards presenting Trump with a potential trade pathway as early as Monday, with the Canadian side emphasizing that there would be limited public support for ongoing negotiations if the August 19 tariffs are implemented.
The U.S. government attributes the impending tariffs to various trade disputes, including Canada’s response to U.S. trade policies, such as the exclusion of American alcohol from provincial retail outlets and alleged discriminatory practices against U.S. automotive and dairy products.
